New Florida Law Throws Speeders In Jail

speeding

Florida’s new “Super Speeder” law, which went into effect on July 1, 2025, creates criminal penalties for excessive speeding. Specifically, drivers exceeding the speed limit by 50 mph or more, or traveling 100 mph or faster, can face jail time, fines, and potential license revocation. This new law aims to address dangerous driving behavior and enhance road safety.

Here’s a breakdown of the key aspects of the law:

  • Excessive Speeding Defined:The law targets drivers exceeding the speed limit by 50 mph or more, or those traveling at 100 mph or faster.
  • Criminal Offense:Unlike a typical speeding ticket, excessive speeding is now considered a criminal offense, potentially leading to jail time, fines, and a criminal record.
  • Penalties:
    • First Offense: Up to 30 days in jail, a $500 fine, or both.
    • Second or Subsequent Offenses (within five years): Up to 90 days in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both, with potential license suspension.
